Today we attended WonderCon at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Apparently we did the right thing skipping Saturday -- 20,000 attendees!! Stars from the X-Files and other famous shows were there. We thought it was cool to see Lou Ferigno -- he still looks awesome.
We spent quite a bit of time there watching short films and film trailers (bring on Iron Man) and watching artists draw. Simon has a very keen interest in this. We wound up getting a Batman graphic novel and some custom Star Wars lego pieces.
Our boys actually saw Star Wars for the first time last night. They saw it in proper widescreen glory and I know they liked it but... I don't think they were that amazed with it. And I don't mean that the f/x are underwhelming... because they aren't for them... but I think they were underwhelmed by the story and caught on to some of the dumbness.
I was an original Star Wars kid. I was 10 in 1977. And I think it's funny that my generation complains about the dumbness and wooden acting in the recent trilogy. Because that's what we have here. I don't think the franchise would have ever taken off if it wasn't for Han Solo. And btw, we saw the guy who played Chewbacca. No, we didn't pay him for his autograph.
Not trying to rag on Star Wars, but it just seems to dominate. There are so many artists out there with all of these different characters and stories... some of it is odd or bad but many truly inventive and worth our time. In the world of fantasy entertainment, why do we still have one franchise to rule us all?
