Early June out of Richmond Yacht Club, this was a windy regatta! Boegers were trying out new things... Simon in a laser and Henry crewing for Jason in Club 420 (actually they switched off.)
PCISA Rose Bowl at Long Beach, which has become a favorite venue. Simon skippering for Alameda High School. Henry stayed home to sail 29'ers.
EYC takes BAYS to the South Bay
This winter's BAYS was different.... we had multiple classes (c420's, 29'ers, Lasers, Opti's) and we towed them out of the estuary to the South Bay. These pictures are from Saturday and it was perfectly nice sailing weather. Sunday was gnarly so we don't have pictures (only rescues.)
High School Sailing at Treasure Island
First a warm-up Norcal regatta with Simon crewing for Henry and then PCISA Golden Bear Regatta (thank you Cal Sailing Team!) with the Socal teams.
Mobile shot collection
All shot with Samsung Note 8, no filters applies.
Elvstrom/Zellerbach at the St. Francis
Simon racing club 420's on the San Francisco Cityfront with Jonothan Andrews. They got 2nd.
High School Pacific Coast Championships
Another trip to Long Beach for the high school final with Simon and Henry as Alameda skippers. I think they wound up 12th.
Congressional Cup
While they were racing FJ's I walked over to the Belmont Pier to check out The Congressional Cup, a famous match racing regatta based out of Long Beach Yacht Club.
Back to back weekends in Clipper Cove that had good wind! The first weekend was a NorCal so basically practice. Simon crewed for Henry and won almost every race. The forecast was too windy for the second day (for this class of boat... expecting 30+ knts.) The SoCal kids came up the following weekend for the annual Golden Bear Regatta hosted by UC Berkeley Sailing Team. Condition-wise we got a little of everything from snail race to gusty carnage.
These pics are from first day at BAYS #2 in Feb 2018. I don't have any pics from second day because it was too windy and crazy to pull out camera. Spent that day rescuing. This day was nice racing with multiple fleets.
Henry and Simon raced a lot of regattas in 2017. These two bookended the summer.
Opti Heavy Weather
Epic ending to the 2017 Opti Heavy Weather Regatta out of the St. Francis Yacht Club on the San Francisco Cityfront. It came down to the last race but Henry managed to fend off his buddy / S. Americans roommate Ryan for the title, gifting me the best 50th birthday / fathers day present ever. More awesome than that, though, was commuting over via our RIB from Alameda to StFYC with Henry, Ryan, and Ben... who were all three leading the regatta at some point(s) during the regatta. You bet they are keeping score out there! Intensely competitive when racing but on the commute they were just good friends having a great time. Very mature attitudes about competition.
29'er Nationals and World Championships
Both Nationals and then World Championships were held by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club on the end of The Peninsula, Long Beach, CA. This was the largest gathering of 29'ers in the western hemisphere ever!
Simon and Henry were coached by Skiff Squad. Their first coach of the 3-week odyssey was Sterling who used to be the owner of our boat, as was his sister Olympian Paris Henken (who came by to visit the boys and ol' #510 w/ the grey hull. Eventually they were coached by David who is a world class 49'er sailor and practices up in our neck of the woods.
Our team -- light as they were -- sailed very well. Alamitos Bay YC puts on great regattas and that place couldn't be friendlier. We got the bonus of being background extras in episode of Criminal Minds, swimming in the local 50m and Alamitos Bay, and kayaking across to Ballast Point for growler refills.
Here's the second, much LARGER gallery. Most of race pics are from 29'er Nationals.
